Tyler J. Oakley is an actor, comedian, and writer based in New York City.
Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Tyler graduated from UC San Diego with a B.A. in Theatre and a minor in dance. He began his career in San Francisco with TV, film, and commercial gigs before relocating to San Diego where he worked in regional theatre, cabaret, and improv. In 2018 he moved to New York City to study sketch comedy with the Upright Citizens Brigade and has since written for and performed in various sketch comedy web series including Laugh Index Theatre Presents…, Boogiemanja, and The Writers Room, which he co-created and produces.
Tyler performs live throughout NYC at Broadway Comedy Club, Greenwich Village Comedy Club, and Brooklyn Music Kitchen. His shows are known for their musicality and Weird Al Yankovic-style parodies of Broadway classics.
He has written and directed multiple short films including Dear Old Dad, First Contact: Alien Idioms, and The Light Before Christmas which have gone on to screen and San Diego Film Week, The Reale Film Festival, The Great Canadian Comedy Film Festival, and others. His sketch comedy webseries “The Writers Room” is available to view on YouTube and is earning acclaim from film festivals across the U.S.
In addition to acting and writing, Tyler has over a decade of experience as a teaching artist in the areas of theatre, dance, improv, creative writing, and social-emotional learning. He’s also worked as a production advisor and choreographer for student musical theatre productions.
He lives in Brooklyn but isn’t obnoxious about it.
